FEBRUARY GUEST SPEAKER: RICHARD EWIG
Mr. Ewig will present a program about a time in 1944 when Cheyenne’s mayor, chief of police, and two other police officers
attempted to extort a number of Black-owned businesses. Several of the business owners approached the county attorney, Byron Hirst, about the extortion, and with the aid of federal employees, the mayor and the others were recorded in their attempt to extort the businesses. Hirst fairly quickly took them to trial and convicted them. They were sentenced and spent time in the state penitentiary.
